EARLY CHILDHOOD – HOMEOPATHY v. CONVENTIONAL MEDS
One of my mother’s most treasured books was a fairly small clothbound dictionary listing homeopathic remedies for common ailments, kept in the bookcase in the hallway. Even as a small child, it occurred to me that it was too small to contain all the knowledge that would be necessary to cure all ills, or by comparison with the vast knowledge the revered family doctor seemed to have. I’m not sure my father was convinced of the efficacy of homeopathy, since his side of the family were beset with allergies – my grandfather had asthma and couldn’t even have fresh flowers in the house because of his hay fever. In turn, my father suffered terribly from psoriasis, for which he has special soap, Wrights Coal Tar.
I had terrible excema on my knees and was proscribed Betnovate by the family doctor, who in those days, the 1950s and 60s, routinely made house calls with an old fashioned doctors bag. Nothing seemed to work.
Nevertheless, my mother swore by her homeopathic remedies, which remained a mystery to me lined up the bottom shelf in the family medicine cabinet above the lavatory in the bathroom and dispensed as tiny white sugar balls kept in conventional pill bottles. As a family with four children, all medications were strictly controlled and we were never allowed to help ourselves, neither were they ever really explained to us.
However, you could say that I had an introduction to Homeopathy as a medical system that uses natural remedies to treat disease from early childhood. It was developed in Germany over 200 years ago and is based on two theories:
- Like cures like: A disease can be cured by a substance that produces similar symptoms in healthy people.
- The body can cure itself: Homeopathy stimulates a healing response and strengthens the body’s ability to heal itself.
That early interest in natural remedies has remained with me all my life, as I sought alternative to conventional medications, which frequently caused me to have allergic reactions, sometimes serious.
